Scholarships

Military Family Support Trust in Sun City Center, Florida.

The Corporation Scholarship Committee selects students to receive scholarships.

The corporation established its first scholarship in 1993 with the award of a $2,000 grant ($500 a year for four years) to a high school senior. The program remained at this level through 1997, while the number of students receiving scholarships increased. In 1998, the process of reaching $6,000 grants began.

For the 2000-2001 academic year, two $4,000 grants and one $3,600 grant were awarded, and on December 5, 2000, the Board of Trustees approved the awarding of three $6,000 grants in 2001. This had been the target amount established at the corporation's inception in 1992, and previously planned for achievement in 2002.Fortunately, donations received in 2000 were such as to permit a one-year advancement of this timetable.

From this point on, donations permitted increasing the number of students to nine in 2004 along with the awarding of four $6,000, and five $2,000 grants. In 2005, the generosity of one family allowed the corporation to award its first $8,000 grant and 2006 saw this number increase to five along with one $6,000 and four $2,000 grants.

In 2007, two additional named scholarships brought the MFST total to twelve and permitted the awarding of five $8,000, one $6,000, one $4,000 and five $2,000 grants. 2008 and 2009 were difficult years for the corporation from the standpoint of earnings. Nevertheless, generous donors raised the top two scholarship grants to $12,000 and the corporation was able to continue the provision of twelve grants. In 2010 and 2011, significant legacy gifts permitted the corporation to increase the total grants to sixteen.
